Touchstone // Buy from Amazon.comDavid Dunn (Bruce Willis) is the sole survivor of a devastating train wreck. Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson) is a mysterious stranger who offers a bizarre explanation as to why David escaped without a single scratch- an explanation which threatens to change David's family and his life forever. Y'know, I was pretty impressed by "The Sixth Sense" so I had high hopes for "Unbreakable" when I first saw it in the theater several years ago. For about the first 1/2 hour, I thought I was really going to enjoy this film - dark, gritty, mysterious and seemingly about real-world superheroes, the fanboy in me was expecting great things... expectations that ended up deflated like a saggy old balloon by the time the end credits rolled. I couldn't put my finger on it, but I just didn't enjoy the movie - it absolutely fell flat in my eyes. I haven't bothered to check it out since then, but given the opportunity to review the Blu-ray release for the mighty DVDschlock.com, I thought perhaps the benefit of time & a few grey hairs, plus the undoubtedly-gorgeous quality delivered via the high def format, would perhaps allow this film to find a way to endear itself to me after all these years... Well, not really. I'd hazard to say that I enjoyed it probably more than I did in 2000, but mostly due to a greater appreciation for the technical filmmaking aspects of the film. The story, the characters - still pretty boring and tepid for me. Shame. Looks great though. Video Presented in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, the 1080p high def transfer is very nice, with very rich coloring (including some of the deepest blacks I've ever seen) and very sharp detail in all scenes. Audio The PCM 5.1 surround mix is impressive, deftly delivering both dialogue and the subtle surrounds. Extras Closing Thoughts Ultimately boring story + great selection of extras = looks great, less filling |
