review: THE MIST (COLLECTOR'S EDITION)

Following a violent thunderstorm, artist David Drayton and a small town community come under vicious attack from creatures prowling in a thick and unnatural mist. Local rumors point to an experiment called "The Arrowhead Project" conducted at a nearby top-secret military base, but questions as to the origins of the deadly vapor are secondary to the group's overall chances for survival. Retreating to a local supermarket, Drayton and the survivors must face-off against each other before taking a united stand against an enemy they cannot even see.

Although Stephen King hasn't had much luck having his fantasic horror stories turned into successful (or even enjoyable) films, "The Mist" is definitely one that can be counted as both successful and enjoyable. It's a taut, well-crafted and very well executed adaptation that grips ahold of the viewers eyeballs and grips 'em very tightly, squeezing until they finally explode in the film's climactic sequence.

The basic premise of the film is all you need to know, as the film is much more about the creepy journey undertaken by the cast than the actual monsters lurking in the mist. The way the director crafts the film, plucking the strings of the viewer's emotions just like a finely-honed violin, is masterful and maddening at the same time.

"The Mist" is a lot of fun and will entertain you while you're leaping out of your seat in fright.

Video
The film is presented in a gorgeous 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer that delivers superb detail and quality from start to finish.

Audio
The included Dolby 5.1 surround mix is remarkable, finding the perfect balance between delivering all of the scary sound effects in-between the various dialogue.
