Anchor Bay // Buy from Amazon.comOn their way to Cabo San Lucas, the cast and crew of a low-budget film get lost and come upon "La Sangre De Dios", a ghost town with a spine-tingling legend about an insane Mexican wrestler. One by one, the cast and crew are snatched, beaten and dragged to a bloody death. The few left alive must figure out how to beat the wrestler at his own deadly game, or die trying. I have to hand it to this film, as it comes at the horror/slasher genre with an original twist, mashing up with wrestling to create a piece of cinema that probably has few, if no, peers. Big snaps to Anchor Bay for finding, and releasing, said gem onto DVD for the horror fans to enjoy in the luxury of their own homes. Blessed with a fantastic tagline ("Let the faceoff begin" - a reference to the killer's penchant for literally ripping the faces off of his opponents), the film unfortunately doesn't end up being the sparkly diamond I hoped for when I first received for review and read the synopsis on the back cover... instead, it's more of a polished stone - still nice to look at, but not nearly as wonderful as a gleaming diamond would be. Still, it's called "Wrestlemaniac," so can I really give it a hard time for not being a "great" movie? Not in good conscience, no. I was entertained, it was fun, that be enough by me. Video Despite being shot on video, "Wrestlemaniac" looks absolutely fantastic in this 16x9 anamorphic transfer and no doubt huge kudos are to be heaped on the mighty Anchor Bay, who always release great-looking films! Audio The included Dolby Digital 5.1 surround mix is top-notch as well. Extras Closing Thoughts Entertaining slasher flick + minimal extras = interesting approach to the genre Labels: review |
