review: MR. MAGORIUM'S WONDER EMPORIUM (Blu-ray)

Fox  //  Buy from Amazon.com

Molly Mahoney (Natalie Portman) is the awkward and insecure manager of Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, the strangest, most fantastic, most wonderful toy store in the world. But when Mr. Magorium (Dustin Hoffman), the 243-year-old eccentric store owner, bequeaths the store to her, a dark and ominous change begins to take over the once remarkable Emporium.

An interesting, and very original, premise guides this film, and while I was hoping for something more along the lines of "Bedknobs & Broomsticks," I have to say that even though the storyline of this one ultimately left me a bit bored, the visuals were solid & impressive. My 5-year old son wandered in a few times and I will say that he was absolutely mesmerized by the special effects and seeing the toy store come alive, so no doubt this one'll make the kiddies squeal with delight.

Despite having seen probably his entire catalogue, I just am not a big fan of Dustin Hoffman. Natalie Portman is as pretentious as can be. Jason Bateman, usually hysterically funny (as the ever-straight man), is underused and underwhelming in this one, unfortunately.

However, it's the special effects that carry the film and, if for no other reason, make this film worth a rental and a bowl of popcorn.

Video
Presented in a 2.35:1 1080p high def transfer, this film looks fantastic and is a shining example of just how amazing films can look on the Blu-ray format.

Audio
As per most, if not all, Fox Blu-ray releases thus far, the DTS-HD Master Lossless audio mix is superb, delivering a crystal clear sonic exerience that will tickle your ears.

Extras
  • nary a one

    Closing Thoughts
Valiant effort to create a unique cinematic experience + zero extras = worth a rental, but still a bit disappointing
