review: THE COMEBACKS

You'll laugh till you punt watching this hilarious spoof comedy that tackles the most memorable scenes from your favorite sports movies. It's the story of Lambeau Fields (David Koechner), an out-of-luck coach trying to lead a ragtag team of fumbling footballers to victory before his long-suffering wife (Melora Hardin) leaves him and his sexy gymnast daughter (Brooke Nevin) gets bent out of shape!

I'm a pretty big fan of David Koechner - while he rarely gets the starring role (this movie being the exception, of course), in my mind he's always the funniest part of any film he's in, whether it be "Anchorman," "The 40-Year Old Virgin" or the sleeper classic "Run Ronnie Run." He can always be counted on to play the jackass to perfection, so it was quite interesting to see him throw an entire movie on his back and run with it.

He's still goofy in this one, although probably not as goofy as he is able to be when just putting in supporting roles. In "The Comebacks" he's surrounded by the wacky ones - i.e. Andy Dick - and plays off them as sort of the straight-man-cum-goofball. Does it work? Mostly. It's not a comedy classic by any means, but I laughed out loud more than a few times, so that makes it plenty enjoyable by me.

Dumb, silly, goofy fun - ain't nothing wrong with that.
