review: DRAGON WARS: D-WAR

Meet Buraki, the vicious, 200-meter long Imoogi serpent from ancient Korea. His army includes giant lizards with missile launchers, flying dragons, soldiers bred for evil and mega-intelligent dinosaurs. Together, they will destroy Los Angeles and possibly the world unless reincarnated warriors Ethan and Sarah can outrun them and resurrect the Good Imoogi, Buraki's ancient nemesis. Dragon Wars reveals every last detail of Earth's greatest battle - a war you'll only believe when you see it for yourself.

"Dragon Wars" was one of the films of 2007 I felt regret for not seeing in a movie theater - as a die-hard b-moviephile, it's not often that these types o' cinema make it to the big movieplexes, and I usually try my best to get out there and pay the price of admission to support those few that make it to the end goal. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to with this film, but was very eager to check it out. In-between "Dragon Wars" leaving theaters and coming out on Blu-ray, I watched the other Korean monster movie from last year, "The Host," and was terribly disappointed. All my hopes for the Korean movie industry rested in the hands of the mighty "Dragon Wars..."

Well, I'm not sure how, exactly, I feel about the film after having sat through it. First, it's a b-movie through and through - could've easily been a Sci-Fi Channel original, with wooden acting, terrible script and not-so-great special effects. But, I have to remind myself it is what it is: a b-movie, about dragons - what was I expecting?

To its credit, it's a helluva fun flick, with even the inane dialogue keeping me amused until the second half unleashes reptilian destruction on a scale only hinted at in Godzilla flicks. If you like your monster movies reeking of fromage, this is the one for you.

Video
The high definition 1080p video is presented in a 2.40:1 aspect ratio that loooks pretty darned fantastic. I've yet to see a bad Blu-ray transfer, and this release is no exception.

Audio
A Dolby TrueHD surround mix delivers a booming soundtrack that'll keep your sub (and all other speakers) rattling from start to finish.

Extras
  • "5,000 Years in the Making" making-of featurette
  • storyboard comparisons
  • conceptual art gallery

    Closing Thoughts
Loads o' fun for your eyeballs (just leave the brain behind) + decent extras = a solid evening's entertainment, delivering a healthy serving of eye candy
