Paramount // Buy from Amazon.comMel Gibson directs and stars in this Academy Award-winning epic based on the life of legendary thirteenth century Scottish hero William Wallace. Returning to his homeland following the death of an heirless king, Wallace (Mel Gibson) finds the political landscape precarious. Edward the Longshanks, King of England (Patrick McGoohan), has captured Scotland's throne and threatens the freedom of all Scottish people, as tyrannical policies instituted by the English plague the Scots. Initially, Wallace is content to stand by the wayside, yearning for the simple life of building a home and raising a family. However, when the woman he loves (Catherine McCormack) suffers a cruel fate at the hands of English soldiers, Wallace takes a stand against the new rule. With his fierce patriotism and determination, he gathers an amateur but passionately rebellious army. Although this makeshift force may be outnumbered by the English troops, their desperation and love for their land surpass any military maneuvers, as evidenced in the film's breathtaking battle sequences. "Braveheart" is one of those films that I can watch often (at least every year, if not more if I catch it on TV) and never get tired of it. It's a truly inccredible mix of amazing storytelling, captivating characters, gorgeous cinematography, epic battle sequences and unbelievable acting performances from all - I would rank this film as one of my all-tiem favorites, definitely in the Top 10, maybe even Top 5. I own the previous DVD release (from 2000) and never thought there was anything wrong with that one, as the film was great looking on that version. However, seeing what Paramount has done with the film 7 years later, and obviously thanks to continued advancements in DVD technology during that time, the film ascends to even greater quality for this 2007 release. Wow. Truly amazing film, and now looking even better than ever, this is a must-own DVD. Video As indicated above, this release includes a brand new DVD transfer that delivers entirely new levels of quality, richness and sheer beauty to the visuals of this visually-stunning film. What was previously murky (by comparison) is now lush, what was previously grey is now lit, what was previously deemed solid now pales in comparison - this is a great looking disc. Audio The included Dolby Digital 5.1 surround mix is as powerful, dramatic and chest-thumping as the film itself. Extras Closing Thoughts Absolutely mesmerizing dramatic tale + excellent mix of extras = very highly recommended |
