review: SPACE STATION ZERO

I was first introduced to the creative force that is Blaise Kolodychuk when my indie zombie film "Rotten Shaolin Zombies" screened at the Calgary Asian Film Festival and Blaise performed a musical number in front of a very dark and disturbing short film of his. Something about that performance (and/or his musical pseudonym "Fukachuk Egg Machine") stuck with me for years and relatively recently I had the pleasure of exchanging a few emails with Blaise, getting electronic copies of ALL of his (hundreds of) songs, and reading his many musings across his various web sites.

One of his more recent - and ambitious - creative endeavors is the 10-part children's series "Space Station Zero" - you read that right: the guy set out to create a children's television series and pulled it off, complete with puppets, animation, sing-a-longs and more! It's so amazing & impressive to me that Blaise not only set out to accomplish & deliver on this vision, but he managed to deliver as well! 10 themed episodes - alphabet, crafts, dancing and more - that are endlessly entertaining for both kiddies and adults alike.

In addition to being endlessly entertaining, I was also struck by how "dark" the series is, both literally & figuratively - while still very kid-friendly, it's no surprise behind the mighty Fukachuk Egg Machine would bring in (inadvertantly or otherwise) a bit of dark/morbid/atmosphere to his kids show... low lighting, strange characters, moody music... This show works on many different levels!

In this day & age, it's rare to come across anyone who creates art for the sake of being an artist, but Blaise is truly such an individual, and his epic 10-part series "Space Station Zero" will entertain for years to come! Well done, sir!

Video
Each of the 10 episodes are presented in their original 4:3 aspect ratios. Shot on video with a limited budget, "Space Station Zero" looks the part, while still managing to deliver a nice presentation that is an interesting mix of do-it-yourself and "Space: 1999!"

Audio
The Dolby stereo mix is solid throughout, with the dialogue and musical numbers both equally clear & audible.

Extras
  • no extras included on the discs, but if you go to the web site, you can download all of the music from the series!

    Closing Thoughts
Unbelievably inventive, creative & original series that is sure to entertain kids both young & old!
