review: DORM OF THE DEAD

Under the Bed Films  //  Buy from Amazon.com

At Arkham University, campus snobs Clare and Julie (Jackey Hall and "Miss Howard Stern" Andrea Ownbey) have a score to settle with goth chicks Sarah and Allison (Ciara Richards and Adrianna Eder). And when Amy (Tiffany Shepis) accidentally unleashes a campus zombie epidemic, Clare picks Sarah as the perfect candidate to join the walking dead. But Clare and Julie may end up on tonight's menu.

I had a lot of fun watching this film. By no means is it a "good" movie (at least not in the standard definition of the term) - it's a low-budget, low production value piece o' DV cinema with all the talent you might expect in front of and behind the camera. However, that is exactly why I enjoyed the film! Is it a slick, polished flick? Hell no. It's rough & scattered with enough plot holes to make you want to scoop your own brains out and eat 'em... but it's truly a "z movie" of the greatest type, and for that, I salute this DVD.

DVDschlock.com was established to review films of all types and budgets - as our taglines says: "Celebrating A, B and Z movies (and everything in between)" and it's meant sincerely. However, I will also admit that the #1 reason for establishing this site was to be able to review self-made, self-financed b & z movies and give them as much coverage & exposure as I could, right alongside the latest, hundreds-of-millions-of-dollars slick-ass Hollywood production. So, with that, it was an honor, and a real hoot, to get to watch & review "Dorm of the Dead!"

Video
Presented in a 4:3 fullscreen aspect ratio, the picture quality of this DVD is decent, but not altogether stupendous. I would hazard a guess that this is due entirely to limited production funds (as opposed to the DVD transfer itself), so no doubt it looks as good as it possibly can.

Audio
Dolby stereo mix is equally decent - not great, but mostly audible, save for when the soundtrack gets cranked up a bit loud in some scenes.

Extras
  • behind-the-scenes featurette
  • trailers

    Closing Thoughts
Light-hearted, low-production, zombie fun + minimal extras = turn off the brain, watch 'em eat brains...
