Dragon Dynasty (Weinstein/Genius) // Buy from Amazon.comWhen a corrupt judicial system frees the crime bosses who killed an innocent family, a renegade prosecutor (Yuen Biao, Once Upon a Time in China) takes justice into his own hands. Packed with full-contact martial arts action, hi-octane car chases, and death-defying stunt sequences, this explosive thriller from action-director Corey Yuen (The Transporter) delivers non-stop excitement from beginning to end! As per my recent review for "Shanghai Express," despite the valiant efforts of my fanboy friends, me & Hong Kong cinema have never really managed to connect on anything more than a cursory level. I'm not close-minded to the genre/industry, it just seems to all blur together in my eyes - same themes/stories, crazy action sequences, goofball humor, repeat. (I know, I know - the same could be said about North American cinema as well, but to each their own...) "Above the Law" strikes me as a decently-made film, with genuinely-impressive fight sequences, yet I've already pushed it from my mind after having sat through it (annoying, given that I'm trying to write a review of it here.) It was, it entertained, but now it is gone. All that lingers, is the notion that asses were kicked, my brain was entertained, and both are good. Video The 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is strong and solid throughout, despite some obvious aging of the source material. Audio Dolby 5.1 surround mix is offered in 2 languages: English & Cantonese -- I went with the latter, and read my dialogue. Extras Closing Thoughts Kick-ass Hong Kong action + solid extras = worthy as an evening's entertainment Labels: review |
