HBO // Buy from Amazon.comThe third installment of the popular Creepshow series launched by George Romero and Stephen King features five new tales of spine-chilling horror. These nightmare-inducing stories include: "Alice" - an account of alternative realities, "The Radio" - which centers on possessed communication devices, "Call Girl" - featuring vampires and serial killers in lust, "The Professor's Wife" - a tale of mad inventors and "Haunted Dog" - depicting hauntings from beyond. Idios mio! - where to begin?! I loved the original "Creepshow" and also enjoyed its weaker, but still very fun, sequel. Both have always managed to hold my attention whenever I'm flipping through the channels and happen upon either, as their tongue-in-cheek humor and genuine creepiness still manage to delight to this day. As such, while I should've know better, I was looking forward for some new "anthology of terror" type entertainment from this straight-to-video release from HBO (did they buy the rights to the name "Creepshow?" What's the deal?) However, within minutes (literally), I was groaning... but not in b-delight -- rather, in rancid horror. And not the good horror that comes from watching something mind-blowing like the opening sequence in "Saw III" - this was true, genuine horror that I had just sat down to subject myself to a true stinkfest and wasn't sure if my mind would ever recover. I think it has, enough to say that this one is a mess - a boring, steaming, heaping pile o' mess - and I no likey. 'Nuff said. Video Despite the middling entertainment value of this DVD, the video presentation is quite nice in this solid & crisp 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. Audio Dolby 5.1 surround mix is mostly solid, but at times the dialogue was overpowered by the background music and/or effects. However, I really didn't care all that much. Extras Closing Thoughts Weak entry in this now-trilogy + 1 extra = only for the die-hard horror completists... or suckers for punishment Labels: review |
