Touchstone // Buy from Amazon.comA ferry filled with crewmen from the USS Nimitz and their families was blown up in New Orleans on Mardi Gras. BATF Doug Carlin is brought in to assist in the massive investigation, and gets attached to an experimental FBI surveillance unit, one that uses spacefolding technology to directly look back a little over four days into the past. While tracking down the bomber, Carlin gets an idea in his head: could they use the device to actually travel back in time and not only prevent the bombing but also the murder of a local woman whose truck was used in the bombing? Tony Scott has long been one of my favorite directors - before I knew who he was, I was thrilled by such action-packed films as "Crimson TIde" (what a truly intense film), "The Last Boy Scout," "True Romance" (wow) and "Enemy of the State." However, for me, it was "Man on Fire" that really fired me up (pun very much intended) - a well-crafted film, with an engaging story, first-rate acting (and actors), and some of the most unique cinematography and post-production editing I had ever seen. When he followed that one up with "Domino" - and in so doing pushed the boundaries (and patience) of moviegoers with his hyperkinetic visual style - I was hooked: Tony Scott is the man. Unfortunately, he took a lot of flack for his acid-wash style in "Domino" (which I thought was brilliant, for what it's worth), so his latest effort, "Deja Vu," scales back the flash-editing, but still retains the quick-cut style that Tony Scott is known for. Once again reuniting with Denzel, "Deja Vu" is a really well-done film - as much as you think you know what you're going into from watching the movie trailers (hey, they have to let people know that this is going to be a mind-bender of a flick), this is a rollercoaster of a film that will keep you guessing until the very, very end. As with this other films, first-rate acting, very well-developed story and a quick pace (despite the 2+ hour running time) make "Deja Vu" an excellent film all around. Whether you're looking for action, drama, dashes of sci-fi or even romance, this one has it all, and had this fanboy squealing with delight. VERY highly recommended! Video Presented in a widesscreen 2.35:1 transfer, the picture quality of this disc is absolutely stellar -- Tony Scott films are known for being visually immersive, and the transfer provided this film shows off all the gorgeous cinematography in truly first-rate fashion. Gorgeous. Audio The Dolby 5.1 surround mix is an equal partner to the jaw-dropping picture quality, as you find yourself surrounded and fully enveloped by the film's soundscape. Extras Closing Thoughts Very intelligent and well-made dramatic action fare + some top-notch extras = highly recommended entry in the Tony Scott film library! |
