Tempe Video // Buy from Amazon.comA double blast of comedic science-fiction fun that winks at the audience and tips its hat to the movies of Ed Wood, Russ Meyer and other B-movies of the '50s and '60s! SPACEMEN, GO-GO GIRLS & THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS (2004, 33 mins.): Aliens from Uranus have come to Earth to steal some of its precious resources! It's up to a group of go-go dancing private eyes (led by scream queen Brinke Stevens) to stop them! SPACEMEN, GO-GO GIRLS & THE GREAT EASTER HUNT (2005, 18 mins.): An evil alien Space Bunny has come to Earth and replaced the Easter Bunny. The aliens and the go-go girls are forced to team up to bring this evil monster to justice! As mentioned in previous reviews, I've become quite a fan of Brett Kelly - both of his cinematic visions and his "take no prisoners" approach to indie filmmaking. Whether you like his films or not, you have to give the man props for pouring his heart & soul into his art - in front of AND behind the camera. This DVD is actually a collection of 2 short films, both starring the title characters "Spacemen" and the "Go-Go Girls." While both shorts revolve around holidays (Christmas & Easter), this is merely an excuse to get let the wacky hijinx ensue. This is pure b-movie magic here folks, with "fromage galore" (that's "lots o' cheese" for you non-Francophone readers out there). Much in the same vein as Ed Wood, the Polonia Bros. or any other do-it-yourself filmmaker (with budgets maxing out in the double digits), these films more than make up with effort what they're lacking in production values and, gosh darnit, they're just damn fun to watch! So don't take yourself too seriously, don't take these films too seriously, and you'll enjoy 'em. Excelsior! Video Presented in their original 1.33:1 fullscreen aspect ratios, the transfer are as good as can be expected, given the low-budget and low-production values of these films. Don't get it twisted, though - the low-budgetness works in their favor! Audio Dolby 2.0 delivers the ear candy in fine form - (mostly) clean & clear, with fantasmagoriphic sci-fi effects to boot! Extras Closing Thoughts Kitcshy frivolity + some great extras = another fine Brett Kelly release from the mighty Tempe! Labels: review |
