Tempe Video // Buy from Amazon.comIn the tradition of SOUTH PARK comes the harrowing tale of Professor Charles Sunkyst and his fateful encounter with the diabolical Dr. Eggplant. After a mission in Bananastan to rescue the president, Sunkyst returns to teaching his class on advanced particle physics at the nearby university. But Dr. Eggplant lusts for revenge and slips onto campus to become involved in the annual science fair! During the violence and adventure that ensues, Sunkyst and his students must rally together to thwart Eggplant's evil plot! Having been a longtime fan of Tempe and anything Mr. J.R. Bookwalter puts out, I was very intrigued to see "Oranges: Revenge of the Eggplant" on their DVD slate, as it's truly unlike any other film Tempe has ever released. True to form, the DVD is put out on one of Tempe's "boutique" labels, Fat Cat, which is steadily building a rep for streeting some original, non-horror titles. "Oranges" is a feature-length stop-motion film about & starring fruit. Yes, fruit. Not drawings of fruit, not computer renderings of fruit, but real-live produce. Taking a cue from "South Park" (and about as kid-friendly), "Oranges" is a truly zany independent vision realized by the filmmakers and unfolding across the 80 minute presentation. It's an amusing movie, and has more than it's fair share of chuckles, but mostly I was astounded at the amount of time & patience that must've gone into the creation of this film - holy smokes it's detailed! Kudos to the filmmakers for this amazing creation they've unleashed upon the world, and pats on the back to J.R. for bringing it to us! Video For a comletely self-made, self-financed, low-budget production starring real, honest-to-goodness fruit, "Oranges" looks pretty darn good. Fullframe transfer is great from start to finish and this film looks as good as it tastes! Audio Dolby 2.0 stereo mix does a good job of delivering the aural goodies in clean & crisp fashion. Extras Closing Thoughts Truly original take on the (stop motion) animated genre + loads o' Tempe extras = highly recommended for those looking for something very different! Trailer |
