review: BIG BAD MAMA

Buena Vista  //  Buy from Amazon.com

After the death of her lover, Wilma takes over his bootlegging business, but without much success. She soon meets up with bank robber Fred, who convinces her and her daughters to join him for his next big heist. In the meantime, Wilma also kidnaps the daughter of a millionaire in the hopes of getting rich off the ransom. Will Wilma and Fred be able to retire with their ill-gotten gains, or will the law eventually catch up with them?

A truly trashy film (meant as a compliment, mind you), "Big Bad Mama" is considered one of the best Roger Corman movies, and stars none other than Angie Dickinson and Captain Kirk in this 70s hijinx-filled drive-in theater romp.

Angie stars as the bad-ass mama who goes on a spree of bank robberies, kidnapping, heists and all manner of illegal activities and manages to get the FBI on her tail. Throw in a couple dudes vying for her affection (including James T. Kirk) and you have yourself a grindhouse-era film that is absolutely a hoot to behold!

With lots o' skin, grime, dirt and rough edges, "Big Bad Mama" holds up fairly well 30 years later and looks better than it ever has, thanks to the restoration work for this DVD release. Corman flicks are always worth watching, but this one is especially enjoyable and is sure to delight.

Video
Released in a fullscreen transfer, the film does suffer from the odd bit of dust & debris, but no doubt it's been restored to as high quality as it's ever going to be, so enjoy!

Audio
Dolby Digital 2.0 mono mix delivers a nice & crisp soundtrack for this classic flick.

Extras
  • audio commentary with Roger Corman & Angie Dickinson
  • "Mama Knows Best: A Retrospective" featurette
  • trailer

    Closing Thoughts
Classic genre flick from the mighty Corman + perfect assemblage of extras = another fine Corman DVD release from the big mouse!
